Only about 1% of the world’s fresh water is available for human use at any time and access to secure sources of clean water is a costly and growing problem in many developed and developing countries.

Bioremediation of contaminated water via algal synthesis offers a practical and low-cost solution whereby select algae can be matched to thrive in particular forms of water contamination.

In response to requests from the coal seam gas industry, refineries and power station partners MBD Energy has successfully conducted extensive bioremediation trials across a wide range of contaminated industrial wastewaters – including those containing high levels of ammonia and heavy metals.

This work indicates that bioremediation using select strains of macro algae has the potential to substantially reduce industry spending on more labour and energy intensive water treatment solutions such as Reverse Osmosis (RO).

Use of macro algae bioremediation of waste water at coal fired power stations offers production of biomass feedstock including biofuel briquettes for supplementary energy production.

Bioremediation of contaminated water has emerged as an equally important commercial imperative as carbon capture and recycling.
