Growth Systems

Choice of commercial-scale cultivation system is determined by evaluation of waste stream types and locally occurring algae strains, harvesting potential and the best available commercial options for the on-going production of algal biomass.

Broadly these options include closed photo bioreactors, open raceways and pond systems. Each of these systems offers capacity to rapidly grow bio cultures outdoors using sunlight, at significant scale and on a continuous basis, under optimally controlled conditions.

Where possible, MBD Energy seeks to make use of existing site infrastructure in order to minimise construction costs.

MBD is currently trialling select cultivation systems utilising captured flue-gases and contaminated ash dam water at a Queensland coal-fired power station. The company has also successfully constructed and operated pond and raceway systems in Australia for the production of food and animal feed well suited to domestic and export markets.

Each of these projects follows successful pilots of cultivation systems at MBD’s James Cook University based R&D facility.

Transport Fuels

MBD Energy is optimistic that alignment between high volume, low cost production of algal biomass and proven processes to convert such feedstock into second generation biofuels will be achieved in the near term.

Emissions Solutions

MBD Energy Limited is currently piloting the capture and recycling of waste industrial flue-gas emissions, including carbon dioxide and in a separate project, coal mine methane gas, that we anticipate will have a range of commercial applications at a larger scale.
