MBD Energy is optimistic that alignment between high volume, low cost production of algal biomass and proven processes to convert such feedstock into second generation biofuels will be achieved in the near term.
The company has researched and invested in the development of a range of potentially feasible conversion options that prioritise ‘biomass per unit area’ over ‘natural lipid extraction.’
Research is focussing on the thermal conversion of the biomass to biocrude. This involves the removal of nitrogen and oxygen to create a biocrude that can be processed in conventional refineries to a range of fuel products.
MBD has engaged in intensive R&D to develop key inputs for a fuel-based project in Thailand. The company is piloting the use of fast-growing algae biomass as potential feedstock for the production of synthetic biocrude which can be made ‘refinery ready’ for use alongside conventional crude oil for the production of a full range of conventional transport fuels including jet fuel, diesel and petrol.
These programs are supported by the Australian Government’s Advanced Manufacturing CRC (AMCRC) and the Advanced Biofuels Research Institute (ABRI).
