Coal power stations
Though perhaps the least politically popular source of electricity generation – coal fired power stations nevertheless shoulder the overwhelming burden of supplying the majority of heavy industry and homes in the developed and developing world with electricity.
In the United States, the world’s largest electricity consumer, about 45per cent of electricity generation is sourced from coal and a further 23 per cent from another fossil fuel - gas. Less than 4 per cent is derived from renewable sources such as wind and solar.
The world’s largest consumer of coal and coal generated electricity – the People's Republic of China presently meets almost 69 per cent of its electricity needs by burning coal. Of the world’s 2,300 coal fired power stations, 620 are in China.
In Australia, coal accounts for 54% of energy production and electricity generation, in turn, accounts for 37% of national emissions.
Due to the abundance of coal and global reliance upon it as an efficient source of thermal fuel for a wide range of essential industries – including steel-making – coal and gas fired power stations look certain to dominate global electricity production for decades to come.
MBD’s Algal Synthesis Carbon Capture and Recycling technology offers many existing and new coal fired power stations a ready means by which the operators can significantly cut atmospheric CO2 emissions using the company’s proprietary ‘BAGS’ technology.
With three major Algal Synthesiser projects currently under design and construction at three of Australia’s largest coal fired power stations – MBD Energy has forecast potential CO2 emissions cuts upwards of 50 per cent at each of the facilities by 2020.
Algal feed & foodGlobal demand for consumable proteins is soaring, creating increased demand for animal and fish feeds as feedstock to grow the animal proteins we enjoy consuming. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified diminishing food security as a major threat to mankind over coming decades.
