Cattle feed
Algal meal sourced from micro-algae is nutritionally rich in protein. Tests have indicated that when fed as a protein-rich nutritional supplement to ruminant animals, such as beef cattle, there is a reduction in methane emissions from the animals.
Intensive cattle feedlots increasingly used to fatten animals are necessarily dependent upon feed typically comprising corn, soybeans, sorghum, oats, and barley. Algal meal produced from dried micro-algal biomass is an ideal low-cost energy feed for cattle when formulated into the rations.
Algal meal is rich in protein due to the high oil content and has been compared with the nutritional profile of soy meal – a common beef cattle feed additive.
The sale and manufacture of animal feed premixes is a major industry. Feed manufacturers purchase raw materials and blend them in the feed mill according to the specifications outlined by an animal nutritionist.
Premixes are composed of micro-ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, chemical preservatives, antibiotics, fermentation products, and other essential ingredients that are purchased from premix companies, usually in sacked form, for blending into commercial rations. Algal meal is an ideal nutritional supplement in such mixes
