Pig feed

More pigs are farmed in the world than any other animal. Commercial pig producers are motivated to grow their pigs quickly and efficiently whilst keeping them disease free.

These requirements demand keeping pigs well fed using feed mixes that are high in energy, low in fibre (cellulose) and supplemented with protein.

Pigs are naturally omnivorous and are generally fed a combination of grains and protein sources (soybeans, or meat and bone meal). Historically, piggeries have been heavily reliant upon the grains industry and costs of production increase significantly at times of grain shortages.

Rich in protein, algal meal made from dried micro-algal biomass is an ideal pig feed supplement.

Pig feed may be bought packaged, in bulk or mixed on-site. The intensive piggery system, where pigs are housed, allows pigs to be allotted a portion of feed, encouraging quality assurance and efficiency in production and assisting with the supply of medication and special nutrients where required.

Intensive piggeries generally face manure and waste water challenges and these must be well managed to meet compliance standards and to avoid the outbreak of bacterial diseases that can quickly kill younger animals.

MBD Energy's Algal Synthesiser system, which can include the use of open pond lagoons, offers piggeries potential onsite solutions to recycling nutrient rich waste water whilst potentially producing nutritious, protein-rich algal meal suitable to be harvested and dried for use as a pig feed supplement.

MBD Energy is doing further work with the Pork CRC on the integration of algae into the industry. Feeding results to date have been most positive.
