Fertiliser
Macro algae and micro algae have excellent properties when used by farmers and gardeners as a form of fertiliser. Rich in nutrients and organic carbon materials, algae has been used for thousands of years as an effective way of improving soil quality.
However, issues have been raised about the sustainability of gathering wild seaweed and the possible impact this practise may have on biodiversity and marine ecology.
MBD Energy Limited’s Algal Synthesis process rapidly grows algae using captured industrial CO2 flue-gases as a form of nutrient and one of the practical uses the algal biomass can be used for is the production of large commercial quantities of agricultural and domestic fertiliser.
Algae can also be partially burned using limited amounts of oxygen to produce biochar – which is useful both a form of charcoal-like biofuel or as a highly prized soil additive that has been shown to markedly improve soil quality and improving farm yield – whilst also sequestering carbon in soil.
Seaweed, particularly bladderwrack, kelp or laminaria, can be either applied to the soil as a mulch (although it will tend to break down very quickly) or can be added to the compost heap, where it is an excellent activator.
Algal fertiliser is available commercially in a dried 'meal' form and as a concentrated liquid extract. While 'meal' products are limited to soil applications due to their insolubility, foliar feeding or root zone applications through drip lines are possible with soluble extracts.
Algal SequestrationAlgal Sequestration utilises abundant sunlight, captured flue gases, and waste water to grow valuable algal biomass on a large scale and on a continuous and fully enclosed and controlled basis.Read more ∇ |
