Vegetable oils
Algae oil ranges between a distinctive green colour (similar to virgin olive oil) and an almost clear light yellow colour. Its viscosity is very similar to other well-known vegetable oils including olive oil and canola and algae oil also contains similar levels of the unsaturated fatty acids found in premium vegetable oils.
Algae oil is edible and has a pleasing flavour – varying with its source and whether it has been produced from fresh water or salt water algae.
Chemically, vegetable oils are composed of triglycerides. Algae oil is different to most other vegetable oils in that it is not extracted from seeds – but from the plant itself.
Algae oils are rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6, making them highly valuable to the pharmaceutical and nutraceuticals markets. However, algae oil may also be used as regular oil for cooking and food preparation.
MBD Energy Limited and its oil extraction technology partners, OriginOil, World Wide Waterworks and Evodos, have been developing improved technologies for the high speed efficient extraction of algal oil from micro-algae, the mass of which typically consists of up to 30 per cent in oil.
Vegetable oils used for human nutritional purposes has a much higher value per litre or gallon than oil used for fuel purposes, such as the manufacture of biodiesel and requires less treatment than refining transport fuel.
