The Full scale Project

The full-scale project at Loy Yang A Power Station is set to occupy approximately 1600 hectares of buffer land adjacent to the power station including unused former mining lands.

Based on the current design, each hectare of land will carry 56 proprietary algal synthesiser ‘BAGS’ enclosed membranes – each 50 metres in length – a total of almost 90,000 membranes.

As with the small-scale micro and macro algae modules now under development at Loy Yang – each ‘BAGS’ membrane in the large-scale Algal Synthesiser installation will be inoculated by captured and reticulated waste CO2 flue gases and, every 24 to 48 hours, half the algal biomass will be harvested and processed for downstream commodities production.

The company’s scientific and technical team has estimated that, based on current performance and anticipated improvements, approximately 200 - 300 million litres of oil will be produced annually and about 400,000 - 450,000 tonnes of algal meal per annum, by the time the Algal Synthesiser at Loy Yang A has been expanded to 1600 hectares.

This algal biomass will have significant commercial value and immediate downstream applications ranging from use as feedstock for the production of biofuels, nutritious animal feeds, or fertiliser.

The large-scale CO2 to Energy Algal Synthesiser is expected to deliver abatement of more than a million tonnes per annum of Loy Yang A’s Power Station’s flue-gas emissions.
