Jerry Ellis

Non-Executive Chairman: Jerry Ellis MA Oxon. FTSE FAICD FAIM HonFIEAust

Mr Ellis holds directorships in the fields of finance and mining. He was elected as a Rhodes Scholar in 1959, and completed the degree of Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours at the University of Oxford.

He began his career with Imperial Chemical Industries in the UK and in Australia and in 1967 joined the then Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited where he rose through the company’s management structure before serving as Chairman from 1997 to 1999. He was Chancellor of Monash University during the period 1999 to 2007 and was a Director of ANZ Bank from 1996 to 2011.

Mr Ellis is Chairman of Landcare Australia Limited and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships.

  Andrew Lawson

Managing Director: Andrew Lawson B.Eng (Civil), Dip.BM

Andrew is a qualified Civil Engineer with 20 years’ experience in the public and private sectors in Australia. For the last 15 years he has held senior management roles across a number of major civil engineering infrastructure projects throughout Australia. Andrew has a thorough understanding of project development, management and construction processes to deliver multi-million dollar projects. Over the past 5 years Andrew has managed a variety of projects in Australia and the UAE.

Andrew has been involved in MBD since its inception in 2006. In his role as Managing Director Andrew has been responsible for transforming MBD into a vertically integrated CO2 to Energy Company. Under Andrew’s direction MBD has pursued a strategy of integration with major CO2 emitters in Australia and Internationally. The Company has a robust business model based on the sale of algae oil and algae meal products.

Andrew has built a strong team that contains considerable depth of technical and financial experience to design, build, own and operate profitable algae based energy projects initially with Australia's 3 largest power stations and then pursue MBD's process on a global scale.


 
Enrico Bombardieri

Executive Director: Enrico Bombardieri MSEng, B.Ec, B.Eng (Elec)

Enrico has in excess of 20 years’ experience in Energy, Funds Management and Stockbroking. He has contributed to the commercialisation of power from landfill gas as part of his Masters in Engineering.

Enrico has 12 years direct industry experience in the energy industry across electricity, oil and gas production, natural gas transmission and energy marketing. He worked initially as an engineer and eventually commercial marketing manager for corporations that have included the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Esso Australia, GPU GasNet (now GasNet Australia) and Duke Energy International. He was joint Managing Director of The Heritage Group Australia, a boutique private equity investment house for 4 years. Prior to taking up his role with the Company, he worked with Tolhurst Ltd (one of Australia’s oldest stockbroking firms) as an energy and resources consultant in its corporate finance division assisting companies in raising capital and was General Manager of Greenearth Energy Ltd (ASX:GER) having led the company to a listing onto the Australian Stock Exchange in February 2008.

Enrico’s educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from Melbourne University, a Bachelor of Economics from La Trobe University and a Master of Systems Engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) where he was awarded the 1994 BHP Prize for Academic Excellence, graduating at the top of his class.

  Seamus French

Non-Executive Director: Seamus French B.Eng (Chem)

Born and educated in Ireland, Seamus gained a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) and began his career as a technology development engineer in Germany. He then moved to WMC Resources in Australia in 1994 initially in a strategic planning and business development role. He then progressed to operational management roles in WMC with extensive experience and achievements in the gold and nickel businesses before advancing to the position of Executive General Manager Copper-Uranium Division.

Seamus joined BHP Billiton as Global Vice-President Business Excellence following their takeover of WMC in 2005. He was appointed Regional CEO of Anglo Coal Australia in 2007, bringing strong skills in operational, safety and business improvement to the role. He provides strong leadership and has seen dramatic improvements in safety, operational performance and business profitability during his tenure.

Seamus was appointed Chief Executive of Anglo American Metallurgical Coal in November 2009.


 
Stan Bates

Non-Executive Director: Stan Bates BSc (Mathematics) Melbourne, FIAA

Stan’s career has included various senior positions, inter-alia Deputy General Manager of the Motor Accidents Board (now Transport Accident Commission), General Manager of the State Superannuation Board of Victoria and Investment Strategy Manager for the BHP Group Superannuation Funds and Senior Manager Portfolio Partners.

Stan has 25 years’ experience in actuarial and investment consulting for large corporate superannuation funds and in 1991 he opened the Melbourne Office of the New York based actuarial firm, Buck Consultants which morphed into Mercer in 2005.

His actuarial consulting roles have included risk management assessments of venture capital projects for raising of capital in commercial and domestic waste disposal, call centres for security alarm systems, a global tracking system for vehicles, wireless medical monitoring devices, sub-prime or non-complying motor car finance both in Australia and the USA, a pyrolysis system for converting waste plastic to diesel fuel, reforestation and timber milling in the Solomon Islands and other resource projects.

Stan has been employed in the retail advisory investment industry for the last 9 years providing investment consulting and investment product advice to dealer groups and financial advisers. He is also Chairman of boutique funds management company, Bakers Alternate Energy Group Ltd.

  Matthew Critchley

Non-Executive Director: Matthew Critchley B.Eng (Chem), GAICD

Matthew started his career as a Chemical Engineer with Dow Chemical Co. During his 13 years with the company he worked in a range of manufacturing and marketing roles and also spent an extensive period of time living and working in the USA and Hong Kong. Upon his return to Australia, Matthew spent the following 7 years building his own business, Knights Marine Pty Ltd, into one of Victoria’s premier marine service facilities.

Following the sale of the business, Matthew returned to a full-time corporate role, initially as Operations Director with Bristol Paint Ltd, then with H. B. Fuller Co. Matthew’s 6 years with the company were initially as the Managing Director of Australia and New Zealand and finally as Group President of Asia Pacific and Vice President of the Corporation.

Matthew’s most recent role was as Chief Operating Officer with MYOB Ltd. During his over 7 years with the company he oversaw its rapid organic growth across many regions and the acquisition and integration of many companies. Following retirement last year Matthew has set up and runs his own executive consulting business MentorUp Consulting Pty Ltd.


 
Ben McKeown

Non-executive Director: Benedict M. McKeown Eng (Mining Engineering), MBA

Ben McKeown is a Chartered Engineer with over 20 years of experience in the petroleum and mining industries, including technical, commercial and project development roles within these sectors.

During the past 10 years, Mr McKeown has been involved in private equity investments primarily in the mining and energy sectors. He is currently a partner with The Sentient Group, an independent private equity investment firm specialising in the global resources industry, and serves on the boards of a number of companies in the resources industry.

In addition to his position with MBD, Mr McKeown currently holds directorships with Ferrous Resources Ltd (NX Director and member of the Construction Committee), Senex Energy Ltd (NX Director and member of the Audit committee) and Rincon Lithium Ltd (Director – previously Chairman). He is a member of the Energy Institute (UK) and the Institute of Materials, Mining and Metallurgy.

Previously, Mr McKeown was a co-founder and partner of the London based Pulsar Energy Capital, and prior to that an Investment Principal at ACTIS, also of London.

  Robin Batterham

Non-Executive Director: Robin Batterham AO, BE, PhD, LLD (Hon. Melb), DSc (Hon. UTS), Hon DEngin (Qld), FAA, FTSE, FREng, FNAE, FSATW, FAusIMM, FIChemE, FISS, FAIM, FAICD, FIEAust, CE, CPE, CSci, AMusA

Robin Batterham is a renowned Australian scientist specialising in chemical engineering. He served as Chief Scientist of Australia from 1999 to 2006 and is the current President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

He has contributed significantly to research and development in the chemical and sugar industries and to the advancement of Australia’s mining and metals industries. He has been responsible for the implementation of new processes as well as significant work in process improvement, particularly process control and modelling.

He has held positions at the CSIRO, Rio Tinto (including VP Resource and Processing Developments, VP Research and Development, Global Practice Leader Innovation), Comalco (MD Research and Technology). Robin Batterham has served as the Kernot Professor of Engineering at the University of Melbourne since 2010.
