Technology Development
The core focus of MBD Energy’s technology development is bridging the need to provide major CO2 emitting stationary industrial plant with an effective flue-gas abatement solution with the natural scientific phenomenon of algal photosynthesis.
Whereas most algal systems simply draw down CO2 from the atmosphere, MBD’s technology utilises the added benefit of direct inoculation of captured flue-gases in order to ‘super-grow’ algal biomass continuously in an enclosed and fully process controlled environment.
An important part of MBD’s knowhow resides in its ability to select the optimum mix of algae strains (both micro and macro-algae), local to the emitter, to optimise high-yield commercial production.
MBD does not use genetically modified algae. Algae are identified and selected from the emitter’s locality and therefore present zero threat to local bio-diversity.
MBD selects algae strains (both micro and macro-algae) suitable for high growth rates and yields tailored to selected end product markets.
MBD’s proprietary low cost micro-algae harvesting process maintains the husk during oil extraction and thereby preserves a significantly valuable co-product in the remnant meal (solids). Preservation of these bio-mass solids makes a critical contribution toward the viability of a scaled-up micro-algae deployment.
Yield (achieving algae density at scale) is critical and MBD is achieving micro-algae growth rates that are significantly above comparable international benchmarks. With a current output of 100-200 tonnes per hectare, MBD is achieving up to three times the international performance benchmark expected of conventional open-pond growth systems.
Unlike open-pond and raceway systems, MBD’s enclosed system is expected to benefit from very low net water consumption (in fact it cleans nutrients from waste water for re-use) and is less exposed to the effects from weather extremes than is the case with open pond and raceway systems.
