Fuel Briquettes
Algae biomass briquettes are made from algae biomass (either macro algae or micro algae and may be used as a replacement for fossil fuels such as oil or coal, and can be used to heat boilers in manufacturing plants, and also have applications in developing countries. Algae biomass briquettes are a renewable source of energy and avoid adding fossil carbon to the atmosphere.
A number of companies in India have switched from furnace oil to biomass briquettes to save costs on boiler fuels. The use of biomass briquettes is predominant in the southern parts of India, where coal and furnace oil are being replaced by biomass briquettes for boiler furnace fuel.
Use of biomass briquettes can earn Carbon Credits for reducing emissions in the atmosphere. Algae biomass briquettes also provide more calorific value/kg than some types of coal and can save around 30-40 percent of boiler fuel costs.
The natural cellulose and oils in the algae binds the particles together to form a solid algal briquette when dried. Burning an algae briquette is generally more efficient than burning many other dry fuels. The moisture content of a briquette can be as low as 4%, whereas the moisture content of coal can be as high as 65%.
MBD Energy Limited is considering using algal biomass produced via recycling captured CO2 at some of its Australian power station Algal Synthesiser installations for the production of solid fuel briquettes as a partial fuel replacement for the burning of coal.
