Strain Selection
Vital to any algae project is the identification and management of the optimum algae strain/s for a specific location. A key to optimising yields is our understanding of the behaviours of the algae and our ability to effectively manage their growth environment.
MBD leverages the considerable expertise of Dr Kirsten Heimann and Professor Rocky De Nys at JCU to isolate, test and cultivate specific, naturally occurring algae strains and variations within strains.
Strain selection and management is a vital component to the success of large scale algae biomass production in multiple and diverse locations. Through their deep understanding of algae physiology MBD’s research team has developed methods to optimise growth rates, lipid content and oil yields during the cultivation phase (e.g. nutrient deprivation).
In addition, the MBD technical team researches genetic variances within a strain to optimise productivity improving on the initial level of genetic selection.
MBD does not use genetically modified algae. MBD protects local biodiversity by only using algae strains found naturally within the local environment of each project location.
Algal SequestrationAlgal Sequestration utilises abundant sunlight, captured flue gases, and waste water to grow valuable algal biomass on a large scale and on a continuous and fully enclosed and controlled basis.Read more ∇ |
